
{"id":14184,"date":"2023-06-14T14:00:16","date_gmt":"2023-06-14T18:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/132.236.156.160\/cuccap\/?p=14184"},"modified":"2023-06-14T14:40:01","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T18:40:01","slug":"2024-nwa-research-grant-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/132.236.156.160\/cuccap\/2023\/06\/14\/2024-nwa-research-grant-program\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 NWA Research Grant Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.watermelon.ag\/assets\/site\/logo.png\" alt=\"National Watermelon Association logo\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/>George Szczepanski, who replaced Bob Morrissey as the Executive Director of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.watermelon.ag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Watermelon Association<\/a><\/strong> in January 2023, reached out to the watermelon research community to announced that although there has been a staff leadership change, the National Watermelon Association&#8217;s commitment to funding research that supports watermelon farmers, including through pest and disease risk mitigation will not change.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The research we fund will be entirely focused on production research, looking to solve issues that our member farmers face on a regional or national basis. Consumer focused research, like those focused on human health outcomes from consumption, market research, and other supply chain research are not part of this grant program.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Grant funding request for proposals<\/h2>\n<h3>Timeline:<\/h3>\n<p>June: RFP issued to watermelon research community<br \/>\nAugust 31: Proposals DUE to NWA<br \/>\nSeptember: Proposals shared with NWA Research Committee<br \/>\nOctober: NWA Executive Committee determines grant awards based on committee recommendations<br \/>\nNovember: Grant award winners announced<\/p>\n<h3>Priority Areas<\/h3>\n<p>Our highest priorities for research are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fusarium wilt<\/li>\n<li><em>Phytophthora capsici<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other concerns include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Anthracnose<\/li>\n<li>Downy Mildew<\/li>\n<li>Cucumber Beetle<\/li>\n<li>Spider Mite<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Submission Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Each proposal should include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Cover letter- including a brief review of the proposal and request for funding<\/li>\n<li>Details of the project- including the objectives\/goals for the project<\/li>\n<li>Timeline &#8211; including<br \/>\na. Start and end dates<br \/>\nb. Dates for project reports that will be submitted to the Association<br \/>\nc. Date that the Association will receive a final report with results<br \/>\nNote: Multi-year projects will be considered, but funding will only cover a single year.<\/li>\n<li>Amount of money requested (for 2024 only)<\/li>\n<li>A listing of all parties involved with the project, including Lead Investigator and any other researchers. If multiple research facilities are involved, provide contact information for each, and information on fund distribution where applicable.<\/li>\n<li>Addendum- a single page layman\u2019s brief on what the project is designed to accomplish<\/li>\n<li>Submit the proposal by email to <a href=\"mailto:george@nwawatermelon.com\"><strong>george@nwawatermelon.com<\/strong><\/a> in a Word or PDF format by August 31, 2023.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Additional Recommendations<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Additional consideration will be given to a proposal that has \u2018matching\u2019 funds, which will allow<br \/>\nthe investigator(s) the opportunity to expand the research beyond our budget capacity.<\/li>\n<li>There is no limit (minimum or maximum) that a proposal may request. However, previous NWA<br \/>\ngrant awards typically range from $5,000-$25,000.<\/li>\n<li>Our focus is to search for more immediate solutions to the most pressing pest &amp; disease<br \/>\npressures \u2013 the biggest threats to yield, quality, profitability and sustainability.<\/li>\n<li>Questions on the process should be sent by email to <strong><a href=\"mailto:george@nwawatermelon.com\">george@nwawatermelon.com<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Additional requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Grant awardees will be asked to provide a 250 word layman\u2019s brief of project accomplishments for publication in NWA\u2019s quarterly magazine, the <a href=\"https:\/\/multibriefs.com\/briefs\/nwacom\/NWACOM050423.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Vineline<\/strong><\/a>, for distribution electronically to NWA membership and the broader public.
