\"squash<\/a>Vegetable breeder, Michael Mazourek<\/a><\/strong> from the Plant Breeding and Genetics section in Ithaca, NY and plant pathologist, Christine Smart<\/a><\/strong> from the Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology section of Cornell University’s School of Integrative Plant Science in Geneva, NY developed squash breeding lines with increased resistance to Phytophthora crown and root rot. In field and greenhouse trials where plants were heavily inoculated with spores of the pathogen Phytophthora capsici<\/em>, the Cornell breeding lines out-survived most other commercial checks and accessions reported to have resistance to Phytophthora crown and root rot. These materials represent a promising start for the development of horticulturally acceptable squash varieties with high levels of resistance to this devastating disease.<\/p>\n
